I’ve been wondering a little lately whether our country will undergo some major cultural shifts if a real, prolonged recession hits. I guess if you’re sitting in Michigan right now you might be thinking “hey we already ARE in a recession!” – but it seems to me as I can’t find a parking space at Costco, the local movie theatre, or Best Buy, that at least up here in Alaska, a real and serious recession has yet to hit.
But what if it does?
Americans are used to striking out on their own when they are 18 or in their early twenties, and living alone even as elderly people. Living in Miami beach I saw many elderly people who seemed to have been shipped off to live alone in apartments or condos, at the time when they perhaps most needed to be around family instead of alone. We have a lot of that in my own family as well, on both sides. Will a serious recession change that? Will grandmas actually come to live with people, as they did in yesteryear, and as they do in many countries around the world?
I for one think that the stringing out of families from coast to coast is a negative development. Many people live in towns with little or no family at all – just like us. We are lucky that my mother in law is able to spend several months a year with us, and that she is wonderful to be around. I realize not everybody feels that way about their suegra!
But it’s my belief that if things get bad economically for a large portion of Americans, a subtle change will begin to take place that may turn out to be a silver lining: families will grow closer; they will have to.
