Bad Times in Buenos Aires

That’s actually the title of a book I read a while ago – I can’t remember if I read it while living in Buenos Aires, or right after I returned. In any case I do recall thinking that the author’s points were hilarious and pinpoint accurate on some things, while a bit bitter and unforgiving on others. You can look at this book here on Amazon.

buenos_aires_assault But today I am thinking about the downside of Buenos Aires because I read an email from a friend who was assaulted there, and it’s pretty scary to imagine what he went through. Take a look at his words here:

I didn’t put the accent marks in – but I think anybody who can read some Spanish can see that this must have been terrifying! He was carjacked. Since he didn’t have any money on him, they beat him up and put him in the trunk of the car. Then they drove around for a couple of hours before letting him go.

Can you imagine? That’s about the worst thing I’ve read recently. I mean to have put him in the trunk, I imagine they were trying to decide what to do with him, and that means they were contemplating the worst thing possible.  Thank God they decided to let him go. Latin America can be an enchanting place – but there is a dark side there that you see a bit more often than you might in the average city here in the good ole USA.
